Naver Place Search Gets Major Upgrades: Smarter Recommendations, Real-Time Waiting Tools, and Better Overseas Travel Search

Naver is making it significantly easier and more convenient to discover restaurants and plan trips. Over the past few months, the Naver Place team has rolled out several powerful new features and improvements focused on personalization, real-time information, and expanded global coverage.

1. Personalized Restaurant Recommendations Now in A/B Testing

Naver Place has begun an A/B test (starting late March 2026, mobile-first) to deliver much smarter restaurant suggestions.

When you search for “[Region] + 맛집” (famous restaurants) in supported areas such as:

  • Gangneung, Gyeongju, Gwanggyo, Gwanghwamun, Daejeon, Bundang, Yeosu, Jamsil, Haeundae, and more

…you’ll now see:

  • Restaurants matched to your personal tastes
  • Context-aware recommendations based on region, menu, time of day, weather, and purpose of visit
  • Trending/hot restaurants based on recent check-ins, reservations, reviews, saves, and navigation data

This test aims to create a more reliable and satisfying dining discovery experience. Naver will refine the service based on test results and user feedback.

2. Real-Time Waiting Info + Empty Seat Pre-booking

No more guessing whether you’ll have to wait in line.

New features include:

A. Real-time waiting status: See the number of waiting groups and estimated wait time for partnered restaurants.

B. Empty Seat Pre-booking (빈자리선점): If there’s no wait, tap the button to reserve an available seat in real time.

  • Works only on mobile.
  • You must be near the restaurant (within the store’s set distance).
  • After acceptance, you have 15 minutes to arrive or the seat may be released.

These tools are currently available for select partnered restaurants (starting with Tabling) and will expand gradually.

3. Remote “Line Up” (Virtual Queuing) Feature

The latest addition lets you join the queue before you even leave home.

  • Tap the “줄서기” (Join Queue) button in Naver Search results or Place pages.
  • Get added to the waiting list remotely.
  • Monitor your position and estimated wait time in real time.
  • Receive notifications when your turn is approaching.
  • Mobile-only feature.

Like the other waiting tools, this is rolling out to partnered restaurants first (beginning with Tabling). Some locations may require distance verification or arrival confirmation—failure to comply can result in automatic cancellation.

4. Much Richer Overseas Travel Search

Naver has dramatically expanded its international travel search capabilities.

Key improvements:

  • Broader geographic coverage — Now includes areas previously unsupported, such as Hokkaido, Nice (France), Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), and many more.
  • Themed & situational searches — Try queries like “with kids,” “photo spots,” “New York photo spots,” “Fukuoka with children,” etc.
  • Menu-specific searches — Find places by signature dishes: “Rome gelato,” “Fukuoka tonkotsu ramen,” “Osaka takoyaki,” and more.

You can now search for places like “Shinjuku Sanchome restaurants,” “Shibuya things to do,” or “Da Nang attractions” and get richer, more relevant results with better filters.

Final Thoughts

These updates show Naver’s clear focus on making restaurant and travel discovery more personalized, practical, and context-aware. From smart recommendations and real-time queue tools to vastly improved overseas search, the experience is becoming noticeably more intelligent and user-friendly.

Expect further enhancements as Naver incorporates user feedback and expands partnerships. If you frequently search for restaurants or plan trips, these changes are worth trying right away—especially on mobile.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Naver Place team!
